The State of Democracy is a joint project of four nonpartisan organizations committed to fostering a more participatory, representative, competitive, and functional democracy.
FixUS is committed to engaging fellow citizens to better understand and address our nation’s growing divisions, dysfunction, and distrust in our political system. Through a number of research projects, public engagement efforts and partnerships, we seek to bring attention and visibility to these issues, build support for necessary changes, and ultimately help to regain a sense of shared aspirations, values, and a belief that there is more that unites us than divides us.
Sustainable public policy solutions to the challenges our nation faces will remain elusive until the country comes together to address the underlying root causes of hyper-partisanship and public distrust. The reasons how we got to this point are complex, integrated, and long-term in the making, and we must confront these causes broadly and holistically in order to bring about lasting change, with deep and meaningful citizen engagement required to guide necessary changes given the declining trust of many with our political process.
Freedom House is founded on the core conviction that freedom flourishes in democratic nations where governments are accountable to their people; the rule of law prevails; and freedoms of expression, association, and belief, as well as respect for the rights of women, minority communities, and historically marginalized groups, are guaranteed.
We speak out against the main threats to democracy and empower citizens to exercise their fundamental rights through a unique combination of analysis, advocacy, and direct support to frontline defenders of freedom, especially those working in closed authoritarian societies. Founded in 1941, Freedom House was the first American organization to champion the advancement of freedom globally.
We bring together conservatives, progressives, and everyone in between to pass powerful state and local laws that fix our broken elections and stop political bribery. Our strategy is central to dismantling the root causes of inequities in our democracy, and ending political corruption, extremism and gridlock.
The Unite America Institute is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that conducts research and provides analysis on the root causes, effects, and potential solutions to political polarization and partisanship. The Institute is particularly focused on exploring how nonpartisan election reforms — including nonpartisan primaries, vote at home, independent redistricting commissions, and ranked choice voting — increase participation, competition, representation, and accountability in the political system.
